As parents it is our values and beliefs that get passed on to our children. This is why more and more families are educating their kids about green lifestyles and earth-friendly living. The younger generation can benefit from learning how to respect all living things and do their part to protect our earth. When you start early, green living becomes a fun family affair that helps to teach kids responsibility and ownership.
Getting your kids involved in your earth friendly lifestyle is a great way to encourage curiosity and interest in the world around them. Simple things like composting, recycling, and repurposing encourages children to ask the right questions about nature. While teaching kids about the importance of protecting the environment ensures that they will grow up to be environmentally aware adults. The other bonus; you might just get some help with the household chores.
Nurture A Love Of The Outdoors
One of the best ways to get kids interested, is by simply playing outdoors. Cool activities, like gardening, planting trees, and nature watching are great ways to instill a love of the planet earth in young ones. Just by going for a walk in the park and talking about nature encourages an interest in the environment. It is a proven fact that parents who nurture a love of the outdoors raise kids that are more active and involved in their communities. Every once and awhile, turn off the tv, putting on your walking shoes and explore the beauty in your own backyard this is a great way for families to bond and learn about nature.
Recycle at Home
Don’t forget that kids absorb everything, it is a “monkey see monkey do” sorta world for them, this is why you need to lead by example and practice environmentally conscious living at home. Simply telling your kids to reduce, reuse and recycle isn’t enough, they need to see you actively doing these things on a day to day basis. Don’t count on the schools to teach these good habits, recycling starts in the home. Invest in a blue bin, and don’t throw away anything that can be easily recycled. Take old linens, clothes and bedding to the Salvation Army and hold a yearly garage sale to get rid of things that you no longer need. Let your kids witness these behaviours and encourage them to help out, as they grow older these things will become second nature.
Get Involved
Let your community also encourage kids to be more earth-friendly. Join in the local volunteer effort to keep your neighborhood beautiful and blossoming. Get involved, by picking up litter and trash with your kids or join the spring cleaning squadron. Volunteering to help out the neighbors with recycling efforts, or hosting bottle drives promotes not only a green thumb but an entrepreneurial spirit amongst your children. They will love taking pride in something and reaping the rewards of their hard work.
