How Hiking Outdoors Can Keep you Fi...

Hello again everyone this is Doc Andrew Hunter coming at you from the great white north of Canada. Being a guy who was born and raised around the great outdoors in the rural areas of the country, I have countless hours of hiking experience and as a result I couldn’t help but fall in love with Mother Nature as a boy.

As time passes and technology gets further advanced, it seems that people around the planet are sitting around more and exercising less. The thought of working out or exercising brings a feeling of exhaustion from hard work before you’ve even attempted it. But I’m here to tell you that it’s not as bad as you think and hiking can actually keep you very fit. Please let me explain to you how.

It doesn’t matter who you are, you need exercise and one of the best ways to stay fit is eating right, following a diet with nutritional supplements, and by forming a regular hiking habit. If you develop one then I’m here to tell you that right away you will be enhancing your cardio-respiratory fitness which of course will target your blood vessels, lungs and most importantly perhaps, your heart. This will get the blood flowing through your body much better and in turn lowers the risks of strokes, coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. Your muscles will begin to get a spectacular toning as well - especially in the thighs and calf muscles.

Regular hiking can also improve the quality of your sleep and lower any feelings of depression you may have. Let’s not forget all of those calories you get to burn off as well. So many of us are packing on too many pounds all too easily these days which especially comes from the levels of unhealthy food that are elevating all the time. If you’re concerned about cancer risks, hiking can decrease your chances of breast, lung and endometrial cancer as well. Even children can benefit wonderfully from hiking, too.

Is hiking sounding any better to you yet? For many who live in the city, you may have to travel for an hour or two just to get out into nature to do some hiking where the air is much better. But I can promise you it will be worth it if you give it all an honest effort. For fantastic results from hiking, you may seriously consider putting in 2.5 to 3 hours per week. Almost every part of your body will be affected by it in some way. Also, keep in mind, the more beautiful and adventurous the locations you choose to hike in, the more exciting and less like work the exercise will seem and become. Getting a good exercise routine in place has shown to have several medical benefits including increased metabolism, and increased hormone production like testosterone.

As for safety while hiking, if you do some research before you go out onto some trails, be sure you don’t choose one that is beyond your capabilities. Bring sufficient water or food if necessary, check the weather reports before you head out, and try to bring someone along in case you run into some trouble. Also, be sure that you dress accordingly and bring any important items or equipment such as a backpack, bug repellent or a hiking pole. I like the motto, “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”

Life as a Middle-Aged Chiropractor ...

I have lived in rural Canada for almost all my life. Although I spent a few years in the city for my chiropractic training, life in the city just never enticed me to make a permanent move there. There are so many things about rural Canada that makes me want to stay here. I find the scenery, the community, and just about all the other aspects of rural life better than city life’s. The reason why I am writing this post is to actually talk about my personal and work life here in the Greater Toronto Countryside. Hopefully, what I write here will prove helpful not just to chiropractors, but to everybody else considering moving here.

For some people, the slower pace of rural life is better than city life’s – I am actually one of these people. Even though I work as a chiropractor, I get to live a more relaxed lifestyle compared to my peers in the city. Clinics in the country are never as busy as clinics in the city. Considering that there is high demand for chiropractors, I get to have a lot of time for myself and my family.

While chiropractic clinics certainly are less busy in the country, this does not mean that people here are very much less negligent so as to not cause injuries to other people. In fact, many of the car accident cases I handle are actually caused by negligent drivers. Each week, I do intensive spinal manipulation to at least five patients who were involved in a car accident. Unfortunately, most of the car accident victims I help actually don’t have enough money to cover their treatment bills. Thankfully some lawyers from a car accident lawyer Toronto firm are able to help many of them out on a “no win, no fee” basis. Through the help of these lawyers, many of the accident victims I have helped were able to settle their treatment bills with me and their medical doctors with the compensation they received from those who caused their injuries.

Since I don’t spend too much time at work compared to most chiropractors, I am able to spend more time with my family. Spending time with my family entails going on days-long camping trips, movie nights, and the occasional trip to the city. I don’t think I’d be able to enjoy having such a great relationship with my family if we didn’t live in the country - many of my colleagues in the city don’t enjoy having a great family life because of the nature of their work there.

Hopefully, what I’ve written here will give this site’s readers a good picture of what life in the country is like for a middle-aged family man/chiropractor like me. Chiropractors and other professionals would definitely do well to consider moving to the country if they think life in the city is making them unhappy. Leaving behind one’s life in the city isn’t as hard as it seems to be. Whatever the case may be, what’s important is that people really think their decision through.

(Note: if you are from the Greater Toronto Countryside and are considering getting legal help for a car accident claim, I suggest you visit http://personalinjurylawyertorontofirm.ca/. In all my years working as chiropractor here in the country, there’s no firm that has come close the quality of care they have given to my patients.)

DIY HAIR TIES

DIY HAIR TIES

We can minimize our carbon footprint by being resourceful and creative, by making things ourselves out of what we already have instead of buying newly-manufactured items.

Take simple ponytail holders or hair tieslike these, for example. They’re adorable, right? But instead of oohing and aahing, coveting them, and buying them, which usually entails using up some amount of fossil fuel to go out and get them or to have them shipped to us, why not make our own? They’re just extremely easy to make, ridiculously so.

We can make them out of anything stretchy or any material with a little give. If we have any of these lying around then we’re good to go:

  • Old T-shirts. Cut the material into strips.
  • Old bras. Cut away the straps or the elastic bands. Printed or colored ones will look awesome!
  • Old panties. Cut away the elastic waistbands or the band around the thighs.
  • Strips of stretchy lace from camisoles or slips.
  • Any kind of garter or foldover elastic .

Cute and colorful work best. We are, after all, making hair accessories. But even if they’re not, we can always dye them or glue on some appliques to kick them up a notch. So shall we start? Let’s gather up our materials and find a suitable work area.

The only other tools we need are scissors and a ruler or measuring tape. Then we have to measure and cut our material into strips, a quarter to half of an inch wide and nine inches long. And then we fold each strip in half and tie a knot near the loose ends, and… voila! We’ve just made a hair tie!

It’s so easy, that it seems inconceivable why people still bother to buy them. They’d definitely spend more time, money, and energy going out to shop for these things.

If we so desire, we can then dye the hair ties or embellish them with accents – beads, fabric flowers, or anything else our imagination can come up with. They don’t have to go in our hair either. These ties really look great as bracelets that we can stack and combine, mix and match, to go with our OOTD (outfit of the day).

We can also make headbands instead of hair ties, just cut the strips a little bit longer so they fit around our heads comfortably.

This DIY is fun to do alone as it’s very therapeutic, and the products of our efforts don’t have to adorn only our hair, but we can make these as really lovely personalized gifts for our friends! But what’s even better is to do this activity with friends, as an alternative to a girls’ night out – a girls’ night in! How about that?

We don’t have to be politicians, lobbyists, scientists, or policy makers to do our part in protecting our earth. Each of our everyday acts and our everyday choices add up to more healing, more protection, more conservation than anything even the President can do by himself.
